Path Finder is a Finder file browser alternative for Mac OS X, which combines the best of Apple’s Finder with powerful, integrated utilities and some innovative ways of accessing and manipulating your files. The new version, 4.5, features undo support, superuser mode, labels editor, multiple shelves, file listing reload button and more.
Does anyone else really wish that Windows and Linux had a file manager like this available?
taken a look at directory opus?
or maybe cubic explorer?
if the developer of the latter one can create what he aims for, it should match the features of path finder.
for linux, i think that atleast konqueror should be able to match the feature set

Yup. Well so far Konq is the unmatched file manager in my view. Using a simple Fluxbox environment, Konq is really my main interface to my computer. It has a very closely integrated command line interface, FTP/SFTP/SMB, the “duplicate tab” function, a close relationship with more advance image viewer such as Gwenview or digikam and also the numerous service menu plugins (like extra pdf, zip, iso or image manupilation capabilities). Just look at kde-apps.org.
It would be nice to see a thorough feature comparison between these best of breed geek file managers on the different major platforms.
Well, as another poster pointed out, there’s Directory Opus for Windows. But that’s only if you like the kitchen sink with your file browser Power users need only apply.
maybe its just me, but path finder feels incredibly over-done and very windows like. i know for some that’s great, but i’d prefer an app that maybe does a little less over all, but does it better. i don’t wnat to have to know the app inside and out to use it effectively.
On the surface PF functions just like Finder? You don’t have to use all of the features. The extra slide out shelves are all neatly tucked away unless you want them. Otherwise, the breadcrumbs are unobtrusive, the drop stack is not obtrusive…
I don’t understand what are commenting about. Also, Pathfinder is MEANT to have more features than the Finder.

if you turn off the shelves, there’s no quick navigation on the left side. you also cannot delete the 3 shelves it sticks there by default. you also can’t build a list like what finder shows without very obvious drawbacks such as ejecting a volume you’ve added to the shelf doesn’t remove it. granted its unfinder like, and that’s ok. however, finder sets the bar for file managers on the mac. if you can’t at least get right what finder has done, the other stuff is moot.

please try to think from a point of view other than your own before replying. i’d like to think i at least give people that much courtesy. i see your points, please try to see mine and why i’m not a fan of this application.
Ooooookayyyyy. I didn’t think I was being a jerk, but I guess I was. I apologize for offending you.
But perhaps I am misunderstanding. Without the shelves, you have the quick navigation in two of the three panes on the left. Those are always there just like in the finder? If you remove them (which you CAN do by grabbing the line and dragging it left) you don’t see them. If you do the same for the Finder (or dbl-click the dot) you are in the same boat.
I was saying that I don’t understand what you are saying, because I am posing questions does not mean that I am attacking your point of view. I just don’t understand it and hoped for enlightenment.
But maybe I still am not quite understanding what you are saying… I have PathFinder and run it with Finder… so if you want to describe what you are talking about, please do so I can give it a try and see if I understand what it is you are saying.
It must be a full moon… people are sensitive tonight. I irritated someone on a Mac board as well because I JOKINGLY said “see, this is why we should never talk politics” when two people started arguing about the US, Europe and the war in Israel. Apparently my smiley wasn’t enough to clue them in…

no problem, i’m sick of my houseguests atm, so i’m already irritable.
anyhow.. with regards to the shelves in pathfinder.
lets say in finder, i have 4 directories in the left pane, and any volumes on my machine as well. what finder got right is that as volumes are added or removed, the list shrinks and grows, and as long as the window is tall enough, all the items are visible.
whereas in pathfinder, i have those same 4 directories in a shelf, and have the volume shelf visible. if i size the volume shelf so that all items are visible, then if an item is added by a usb key or some other removable storage, the list changes and a scrollbar is introduced. the problem lies with the fact that the volume icons are treated differently than the 4 directories. if i resize the volume shelf so that all items are visible, then some items in the other shelf become obscured and scrolling is required.
i tried to be smart and drag volumes to the other shelf to alleviate the problem, and although that works obviously, i can’t eject without right clicking, and even then, the item remains in the list despite it having been ejected.
this is but one example. i could go on all night about the lack of thought on many of its UI widgets, enless amount of checkboxes in the prefs that don’t quite convey what they do, etc.. but i don’t think its fitting to go into such detail here.
Ahhh! O.K. I see what you are saying. Yes, I do like how finder sizes the icons in the shortcuts and devices panels.
Yup! While is really agree with the FTFF “movement”, replacing it with PathFinder is not an option. It’s over-done.
… but I found it to be “too” complete. I don’t like finder too much, and PathFinder is just Finder On Steroids
PF has a lot of nice things, but coming from Norton Commander on DOS, Midnight Commander on Linux and Total Commander on Windows… my choice has been Disk Order.
Now if I could find XTreeGold for Mac
