Web monkeys and source code jockeys are being recruited by RISC OS Open to help coordinate the ‘shared source’ RISC OS 5 project. Recruit is used loosely here as ROS Open say the open source-ish initiative will be run purely on a “voluntary basis”. The team is hoping to hear from charitable people who know their makefiles from their wildwildwikis. Company secretary Revill asked for anyone “interested in helping out with the RISC OS shared source project” to visit the RISC OS Open website. In another article, author of the RISC OS article for our contest explains how to improve RISC OS’s look.
…is when or even IF I’ll ever be able to use RISC OS on my Dell Axim? Or if the open-sourcing of RISC OS will eventually mean some laptops with it as the OS and able to kick the asses of the rest of the laptop crowd with regards to battery power life, multimedia and emulation (gaming)? Does anyone know, or is this merely going to lead to the Qtopia and GPE people raiding the source for things to improve upon in their endeavors?

Of course you won’t be able to use RISC OS on your Dell Axim. First of all: why would they open source the entirety of RISC OS so people won’t buy computers/OSes from them any more? They’d be undercutting their own buisness, and NO, they wouldn’t be able to survive on support alone.
Second of all: ARM assembly code. LOTS and LOTS of it, in the OS and the userspace. You might as well use the available emulators instead.
Have a look at it: http://images.drobe.co.uk/extra/newerlook/SCREEN.png
I always mix Risc OS with React OS, which are two entirely different projects.
