In a nod toward the RTOS market that founder Jim Ready pioneered, MontaVista is shipping a new version of its commercial embedded Linux distribution said to offer true real-time performance along with a very small footprint. MontaVista Linux Professional Edition Version 5.0 boasts enhanced real-time performance and lower resource usage.
Linux should follow this direction – lower demands for hardware. It does not make sense to follow Win path. More code=more mistakes=lower performance. I want to use ever increasing computer power for my needs and not for OS needs.
More code does not necessarily mean less performance. It simply means more features. Desktop linux may seem bloated today but its not because of the kernel. Try Puppy linux or DSL (Damn Small Linux) if you find your Linux distro slow. They are very lightly packaged (70 MB and 50 MB AFAIK) and they really run circles around the big ones. Give them a try as a live CD.

Yup, that’s the way distros should go.
Is my favorite part of the announcement.
It is nice to see MontaVista using a compiler that doesn’t exist yet.
