“Nokia has just announced an update to the Internet Tablet OS 2007 edition, feature upgrade release is now available for download. The update (version 4.2007.26-8) includes Skype client support, Adobe Flash 9 browser plug-in, improvements in online use times and single memory card support up to 8 GB.”
That flash9 support should make things interesting..the n800 is turning into everything the n770 should have been. I’ve been tempted to get a N770 in the last few months as the price has dropped to about $140 in most online discount stores. The n770 development community is very well established also…but some of the feature in the n800 keep making me pause. Too bad you can’t run OS2007 on a n770…(or can you?)
Answered my own question…looks like there are some hacker builds of 2007 for n770.

Those are called hacker builds because Nokia doesn’t officially support them but those are made by Nokia anyways.
Yeah I’m well aware of that, that goes for any product with community builds, I don’t know of any company that supports reflashed devices lol…but sometimes the community build far exceed the quality of the base ones. Check out HTC phones, I love my 8125 for this reason alone. A strong community of developers with the freedom to do as they see fit, can really make or break a product like this.
…what no iphone comments yet!!!
I agree with you about the “reflashed devices” but I don’t think that’ entirely the point. IN fact when you upgrade your N800 you are reflashing it too.
I think it’s more of a liability thing for Nokia, whereas they say they’ll do it on a best efforts basis but if they can’t make it work for whatever reason then it’s up to you.
If the internet tablet OS had the following built-in I would buy one in a heart beat:
1. Calendar & Addressbook (syncable with iSync of course)
2. AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ messenger (with video/audio conferencing)
3. Ability to update OS from a Mac
Maybe I will wait until the next itteration of the OS…
1.) Probably won’t happen anytime soon, from what i understand isync is kinda difficult to code for, hence most no-included sync profiles have to be paid for.
2) can handle most of those, video conferencing only worked with googletalk users at one point, with the addition of skype, that might have changed.
3.) i think updates can be done OTW..
But to be honest, sounds like you just need to get a palm-based pda. Any model palm pda could handle all those things with little difficulty. If you are waiting on a nseries for that..you might be waiting awhile lol..
regarding 2.) Pidgeon and Skype don’t do what you’re looking for?
regarding 3.) http://maemo.org/community/wiki/howto_flashlatestnokiaimagewithmaco…
Calendar and Address book, however are still seriously lacking. I’ve been trying to use Dates and subscribe to published calendars with little luck.
Importing vCards with address book is a similar fate. the built-in calendar won’t read vCards > 1MB or so, and third party apps seem to crap out at random places when I try to import my address book.
Just a tip about vcards > 1MB. I assume that you are talking about a single vcf file exported from Mac Address book containing all your contacts.
The workaround is to select all you contacts in address book and *while holding the option key* drag and drop on the desktop in a folder. All your contacts will be exported to single files.
Otherwise you can always use one of the free tools on teh net. Just google Vcard splitter

I guess I’ll be updating my N800 this weekend.
right now, the biggest missing feature (for me) is a solid PIM (like others have said, that syncs with iSync). Heck, even something that syncs with OpenSync or CalDAV and LDAP or anything!
A built-in todo app would be nice as well.
Oh, and a decent application launcher… and better finger support…
It does have xterm, ruby, ssh support though, things could be worse
I believethe GPE Pim apps have been the primary pim software used on the device. GPE is supported by opensync. http://gpe.handhelds.org
multi-touch, like on the iphone of Microsoft’s surface PC.
That would really allow for faster typing on the keyboard, and some pretty awesome applications on a screen even larger than the iPhone.
The next generation only needs hardware h264 decoding and multi-touch in my mind to be perfect
