The Ubuntu team has released the beta for Ubuntu 7.10, Gutsy Gibbon. Highlights include GNOME 2.20, fancy desktop effects through Compiz Fusion, and more. Kubuntu 7.10 beta has also been released, featuring Dolphin as the default file manager, a restricted drivers manager, and updates and polish across the board.

I installed tribe5 on my laptop about a week ago, and (to no surprise) it just keeps getting better.
Things mostly “just work”, but my major pain is with graphics drivers and acpi:
– ATI restricted driver (fglrx): no compiz, suspend/hibernate hardlock.
– ATI opensource driver (radeon): no compiz, no 3d, screen garbage at times, no hibernate.
IMHO developers should probably give higher importance to these kinds of bugs because (specially on notebooks) suspend is a MUST!
Other than that, i’m actually extremely happy with gutsy.
On legacy hardware, there are a lot of issues that didn’t crop up with Feisty. The PPC iMac I have Feisty chugging along on had the following issues with Tribe 5:
– core calculation libraries like liboil compiled using only AltiVec (which is unavailable to G3s)
– OpenOffice crashing on opening earlier documents and when creating tables of contents (platform independent)
– IDE drivers not being probed by the kernel resulting in drives not being recognized (an issue also noticed by PC users)
Something seems to have changed in the development process and the paradigm seems to be support for the newest NewWorld Macs but ignoring older NewWorld Macs which are completely capable of running the OS.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought that Ubuntu had dropped official PPC Mac support.
Community support, still served off Ubuntu’s servers.
What card do you have? Radeon 7000 – X850 should have compiz, 3d out of the box with the open source drivers. Eg. I have X800 and compiz works fluently and without problems. I also have a laptop with Radeon Mobility with working hibernate and suspend.
Regarding fglrx, Ubuntu developers can’t fix faults of a closed source driver.
The notebook is an aspire 5050 with ATI Radeon Xpress 1100, i guess it’s something similar to the X300 for graphics.
Sorry, no compiz at all here (and i did try a lot of different Xorg settings)… don’t believe me?

Absolutely! i just wish i didn’t have to deal with the issues it has. i had no idea fglrx would work so badly on my laptop
The Xpress chipsets only recently gained 3D support with the open source drivers, and even that support isn’t good enough to run compiz, unfortunately.
Compiz will work with the fglrx drivers, however, if you install xserver-xgl 🙂 I’ve been told that installing it will automatically configure it to start with X (which didn’t happen previously with Feisty… It requires extra configuration there).

after installing the xserver-xgl compiz does indeed work… i just have to fix suspend/hibernate now 8-|
I have a Xpress 200M myself, and in the early Gutsy, the only way I could get Compiz to work was to make a new session that loads XGL. But just recently one of the updates made Gutsy automatically load XGL on startup, so Compiz was enabled without my intervention.
I don’t know why that doesn’t happen with your system. If your graphics card is supported with fglrx, it should automagically start an XGL session.

I’ve been using the prereleases for a while now, and I’ve been impressed. I can’t wait until it’s fully done and has that final coat or polish.
So far, the only problem IMHO is the default background, that reminds me a very good chocolate. I love it, but I must stop eating because I am a little fat. And it will be hard to change the background, because I love chocolate…
so they went back to a dark brown, but kept the orange crap? talk about unsightly

Yes, it does have a “chocolate” feel, but it was also the first thing i changed in my install, right before the orange theme and icons…
On the other hand, i wish more wallpapers were included, with different styles and colors. I really hope they add a couple before final release.

I do hope they will come to a point where they include with a fair bit of consistency a variety of svg and png wallpapers that contain transparencies which will allow for theme agnostic coloring.
Plus isn’t still possible to install those desktop-calendar packages that were availible way back in the beginning when ubuntu just came out (you might remeber there were some semi-nude background images at one point)
Currently running it on my laptop and I had some issues with compiz and KDE, mainly the knetworkmanager crashing and tray icons popping outside the tray. I can’t wait to see the final release.
I’ve been eager to get new release, sometime whishing to return to Gentoo, but the remind of compile time gets me to wait. Arrggg, where did all my spare time went? LOL
Looks alot better than Ubuntu, login screen and splash look very nice. Dont know why but they don’t save the window positions by default and no kdegames installed, splitting the packages up as they do is crazy.
I downloaded Tribe 5 just yesterday – I couldn’t get Network Manager to connect my wireless. It detected the wireless, and even my neighbor’s, but wouldn’t connect. I filed a bug report yesterday, waiting to hear.
I’m downloading the beta right now – hope the problem is solved. I’ll find out in a couple of hours.
I am very much looking foward to this release.

I’ll answer my own question. I just downloaded Gutsy Beta and the problem with wireless that I had with Tribe 5 has gone away.

Blue on blue? Are you kidding me? i would go blind using that theme. Especially with splashscreen.
Dear god, it’s gotten worse since I stopped using KDE. Blue is a color, not a religious preference.
Themes are supposed to be balanced by default. This isn’t.
Although blue is the default color for KDE, it is not that pervasive on the UI by default. That seems to be a choice made by the Kubuntu art team.
Blue happens to be my favorite color and the one that I use in my desktops together with some shades of gray sometimes, but I have to agree with you here: too much blue everywhere and not enough contrast, at least on the splash screen. They really need to work on that.
Does anyone know if dolphin is the KDE3 version or the KDE4 version? I think the kde3 version is a little too basic to be the default file manager… but perhaps they pulled in a snapshot of the KDE4 version instead, which is very impressive already.
They took the KDE 3 version of Dolphin. The used version is based on Dolphin 0.8.2 and contains some minor fixes and improvements like the ability having 2 sidebars in parallel. See also http://enzosworld.gmxhome.de/download.html section “D3lphin 0.9” for more details…

.. or you could use a distro which deals wih the whole xserver xgl/whatever thing by itself, like OpenSUSE or Mandriva

If you google howto upgrade all it comes up with is blog spam.
If you click the first link in the first post of this thread there is a big headline that says “Upgrading from Ubuntu 7.04”.
Can we get some adds on here or subliminal messages going saying ‘Ubuntu is your God’ or something?
No articles including Red Hat Enterprise, SuSE Enterprise, or any other except Ubuntu forget everything else why is this???
I swear this is just like Windows land no other OS other than one thrown the others in the trash!
nobody here would care about the enterprise editions, have to go with the home user distros if you want something other than ubuntu here
Why don’t you write a none biased reviwed of one of those Distro’s and submit it to thise site. I’m sure they would not mind.

Live CD works great. This release seems much more responsive to me than 7.04, especially for running off the CD. Only issue I ran into was clicking Install starts the bouncing icon for feedback, but the installer itself never starts. Any ideas anyone? Reporting a bug, but thought to ask here as well since I was posting anyway.
I hope that one day we, linux users, could pass this discussion about which color/wallpaper/icon is better than the other to something more constructive…
Meanwhile, chocolate is good enough for me as long as I can change it…

when i see the improvements that have been implemented. Also the ubuntu devs aren’t too proud to implement other implementatations with the purpose of continuously improvement. Fortunately the Peter Principle doesn’t apply here:-)
I did a clean install on my Dell E1505n laptop yesterday. So far, so good. Everything was detected, hardware-wise – except the built-in Winmodem, which I don’t use anyway. They even restored the Ctrl-Alt arrow keys for moving between virtual screens, which had been missing from earlier versions.
I couldn’t get the gui to boot on my widescreen LCD; preferred resolution = 1680×1050. Thankfully I won’t be doing a fresh install. I just wanted to try it.
