Ati AMD has released a new version of its graphics drivers that fix some long overdue bugs. “Today it’s now time where the fglrx driver reaches yet another milestone. Not only does today’s release address many of the outstanding bugs for the earlier GPU generations while also introducing a few new features, but it also delivers AIGLX support! Yes, you read that right. You can finally run your ATI graphics card with the fglrx driver and run Compiz, Beryl, or Compiz Fusion without using XGL!”
Linux users ditch non-free operating systems to use free operating systems with tainted kernels.
Talk about being a hypocrite.. hahaha!
Some people use it for other reasons like:
– Cost
– Stability
– Modularity
– Ease of administration
– Community
Not everyone is a Nazi…
And not everyone refers to those who like free-software as Nazi’s
I think it’s fair enough to be honest, the guy was clearly trolling.
you forgot ease of use and less headaches, the reason I switched
I wouldn’t give any points for a nazi post.
If I could demote your post to -200, I’d do it.
Not because you’re wrong (in the reasons for using OSS), but due to your needless use of the term Nazi.
Calling someone a Nazi has no business here. Period.
Either you have no idea what you are talking about (read: you haven’t taken the time to learn 20’th century history) or you are plain careless. (… And I’m being very polite)
Please edit your post and remove the offending part.

How amusing.
One: Anyone may call anyone a Nazi as an insult regardless of whether or not that persons actions are directly similar to those of Nazis. Insulting the OP by assuming that he must not be familiar with Nazis as they were in reality is, to me, much more offensive than the original comment.
Two: Offense can only be taken, never given. If you don’t like what you see you can ignore it, flame it or vote it down. Asking the poster to censor himself because you have weird emotional hangups is just plain rude.
Third: It is well understood and commonly know that to call someone a something-Nazi is to mean that he is, on that topic or in that area, a deranged lunatic feverishly devoted to his cause and unwilling to listen to reason. The fact that you objected to this usage indicates either that you have no idea what you’re talking about (read: You haven’t participated in any forum on the internet in the last 20 years) or you are just plain stupid.
Fourth: If you really want to defuse the OPs comment it would be sufficient to merely reference Godwin’s law. You would know this if you were paying attention and not merely looking for excuses to climb on to a high horse.
I could have written a long post, citing parts of my family that died by the hands of the Nazis, that, as weird as it sound, would most likely not share your ‘enlightenment’ view of things.
I rather, instead, save the time, hoping instead that neither you nor your family will learn, in the flesh, the vast difference between someone that does not agree with your views concerning OSS, and someone that can, and will, send you to Auschwitz just because he doesn’t like your family name and/or religion.
I can only wonder why you, and not the OP, chose to valiantly defend the OP’s right to call people Nazis.

I can only wonder why you, and not the OP, chose to valiantly defend the OP’s right to call people Nazis.
I can only wonder at why you would be surprised at being called out for your comment. Surely you must expect to be laughed at when you try to tell people what they can and can not say. Does it really matter who writes the objection?
I was preparing to write a long post summarizing why calling people Nazis is beneficial and explaining why it was necessary that I write in opposition to your post. On consideration, however, I think that you are unlikely to be interested and since a very off-topic flame war would certainly result, I will drop the subject here.
It’s only the first post and you’re already fulfilling Godwin’s law? :S

Maybe it is Quirk’s Exception?
AMD’s graphic drivers wouldn’t work when I built a 2.6.23 kernel on ubuntu 7.04. Did a fresh install of 7.10 and 2.6.23 kernel, still couldn’t get the AMD graphic drivers to install. I hope today’s release will fix that. All I wanted to do is play some tux racer or whatever its called now. I know I know, I’m very easy to please.
Kernel 2.6.23 isn’t supported yet. Read the Phoronix article 😉
Allow me to be the first to say that sucks.
They have a 2 or 3 month release cycle for the ATI/AMD drivers (I forget if it’s 2 or 3). There was a Phoronix article a few months back.
They don’t make the drivers properly compatible with a new kernel until it has been released. IIRC 2.6.23 was released less than a month ago. As such, it’ll be a couple of months before the ATI/AMD drivers will support the 2.6.23 kernel. They’re working on a version that will, but since it’s near the beginning of the release cycle for that version of the driver, it’s obviously not going to be released yet.
It would certainly be nice if the ATI/AMD drivers supported the newest X.org and kernel available when they’re released, but they need time to make the changes and do appropriate testing.

True, but there is an unofficial patch until then:
http://pluto.blackbone-ev.de/atipatch.php
The link is porn spam, DO NOT CLICK.
I clicked on it and didn’t see any porn. Maybe it was hacked when you tried it (or you have some spyware that redirects you to a spam site)…
I just clicked the link again and porn advertisement just popped up. Its not spyware since I tried two different machines and had the same results. The site has porn advertising, big window covering it with video stream.
DO NOT CLICK THE LINK!
Umm… did you even bother clicking the patch?
I have better things to do with my time than post links to porn sites.
Heres a direct download link:
http://pluto.blackbone-ev.de/downloads/patch842.tar.bz2
I believe you apply the patch before you build the kernel module but I have not tried since my distro doesnt host 2.6.23 yet.
It patches a file called “firegl_public.c”, so CD into the directory where that file is located and apply the patch.
“””

Geez! Take a chill pill. Yeah, there is a popup. Has some pretty nice previews, too, playing in a nifty demo app. Not bad for free. Click the ‘x’ and it obediently goes away. And does not reappear on successive page loads. All in all, as pop ups go, it was well done.
The patch is right there on the page. And I think that most of us can handle being surprised by a porn ad without experiencing *too* much emotional trauma.
Ah, that’s why I didn’t see it, Firefox blocked the pop-up ad.
The latest nvidia driver doesn’t get loaded either when running 7.10 and 2.6.23.
Though i got OpenSuSE 10.3 retail a few days ago. A few steps and the nvidia driver runs under 2.6.23 with no probs.
Compiling a kernel on OpenSuSE is simply:
1)cd /path/to/kernel/source
2)make menuconfig
3)make rpm
4)rpm -ivh /usr/src/packages/RPMS/x86_64/compiled-kernel.rpm
5)mkinitrd
6) Edit bootloader via YaST2
7) reboot
Being active rage3d.com forum lurker 2-3 years ago, remember leaked rumors that OpenGL driver will be completely rewriten. TWO YEARS is a bit long, but they did it. Great news anyway.
Yeah, though those of us with firegl cards (such as the Xpress 200 chipsets found in *many* laptops) will have to wait another month for 8.43…
It is good to see a better Linux driver, and it is even better to see AMD honouring its promises, as an indication of the not too distant future when they open the specs to give the community the chance to develop and mantain 100% free drivers.
Time for the naysayers to eat crow.

…saying that ATi would never have aiglx support despite many of us saying they would.
Mmmm, ain’t that crow tasty?
Good on you ATi for stepping up to the plate and delivering what your customers want.

Many many years late, but hey, better late than never, right?
Many many years late, but hey, better late than never, right?
Many, many years? Just how old do you think AIGLX is anyway?
Or do you just mean they’re years late in doing anything good?
Edited 2007-10-23 22:39
Can they please ask for more and step up to the Linux PPC plate…;-)
Would it really take so much effort to do this, I wonder (not a developer, so it’s a straight question)
Once the open source drivers based on the recently released Ati specs are built you’ll most likely get PPC drivers. That could be a little while, but I suspect it won’t be *that* long.
Cool, that’s reassuring – time to seek out that flashable 9800 Pro…>.<
Why make such a childish post? Twenty months of nonsupport for AIGLX may not be “never”. But it is certainly excessive enough to make reasonable people wonder if it was *ever* going to happen. I had more or less given up on it, even if I didn’t post about it.
And in a very real sense, it was not ATi “stepping up to the plate”. It was AMD. Furthermore, as a customer, I can tell you in no uncertain terms that they have not given me what I wanted. What I wanted was AIGLX support in a reasonable amount of time. What I got was AIGLX support after an insanely long wait. Those are two different things.
Time for the naysayers to eat crow
Wtf has eating crow with that?
And on the other side, great for AMD. Even if the children I don’t have became adults while I was waiting for this to happen.
Anyways, it is of no relevance for me. If you’d read my posts history, you’d see I care about free way more than about better. But as soon as open drivers hit the road (and maybe few reviewers to test them), AMD gained customer in me and Nvidia already lost me to Intel. Basic 3d is all I need.
This release is tested for all ATI Radeon GPU products from the R300 to R600 series. This does not include support for the FireGL series, but the workstation compatibility will be introduced next month in fglrx 8.43.
This is important to folks like myself that want/need CAD and with AMD owning ATi,combined with DELL and HP this makes Linux a much stronger platform for CAD on Linux not being a second class platform for AutoDesk and others that offer Linux binaries, but not the best solution, compared to Windows XP.
I do not know how much of the upper management from the origional ATI purchase that AMD kept on staff, but generally most of the high ups are fired in favor of people who will embrass the new owner’s management style when this type of buyout/merger happens.
That being said, this was not ATI making good on any promises. This was AMD Making good on their promises. I also might add that AMD has a stellar track record for making good on the promises they make.
Great news for AMD/ATI and the linux community as a whole.
More importantly, this was AMD leveraging one of the main reasons it bought ATi–to own the Linux Market for Desktop and Server.
Intel is entrenched in Windows and Mac.
Linux has been much more embracing of AMD.
Ah the beauty of greater competition. May they all raise the bar.
Given the good support for wireless and graphics, it’s unfair to say Intel is windows/mac only.
In fact, I’d say Intel hardware is amongst the best supported under linux.
For real. And they also have been working hard on making linux much more energy efficient.
You mean the Intel that released opensourced drivers for a shitload of graphics and chipsets way before AMD?
If anything, AMD has always seen Linux and OSS in general as an after thought. Their primary focus has and will be Windows.
AMD bought ATi because it needed the chipset and the GPU teams. It is likely than in the new 45nm processes we are going to see a much more SOC-approach to processor design: CPU+GPU+Chipset on a single die. Rather than just throw cores at the CPU. Whether it was a cost effective purchase is highly debatable, as ATi’s purchase has been a rock around AMD’s neck.
Linux had diddly squat to do with the purchasing of ATi.

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but this driver is really slow under Ubuntu, noticeably slower than the same setup using XGL.
fgl_glxgears also shows noticeable flicker. However, it does have fully working AIGLX so AMD did deliver on this promise, I can confirm it. Also, take my report of slowness with a shaker of salt since I may have my xorg.conf misconfigured or something.
Anyway, thanks AMD/ATI, I think at least.
What chipset do you have? This is for the R300 to R600 series of GPUs.
Sorry, I forgot to mention that, it was an R500-series chip, the X1300 card. It is definitely a supported chipset, and I did get 3D acceleration from this driver. I did end up downgrading back to the stable 8.40.4 driver in the end because it just gave me much better results. I’m still hoping that the open source drivers can bear fruit within the next year or two.
Edited 2007-10-24 22:55
It’s slower on my system too then 8.40 and XGL there are stutters in the frame rate that make it seem slower. When opening new windows the open animation will sometimes be liquid smooth and other times be choppy but at random and not just with the open animation… with the old driver and XGl it was always liquid smooth animations.
Firefox has some composite issues with this driver too. Also I notices the all my blur effects are missing.
Gusty and X1600 Pro PCIe
AMD coming through, heres hoping they keep the rest of what they promised
I know they said there would be issues, but this thing is damn buggy and slow. There seems to be issues with AIGLX. Right now running the OSS drivers for people with r300 cards is the best way to go. i’ve notice that what slows it down the most seems to be firefox, the same thing used to happen in XGL, but that issue has long since been resolved. Tvtime doesn’t work even though video overlay is on. I tried it, it seems, promising but, I’ll hold off until it becomes more stable,
i’ve notice that what slows it down the most seems to be firefox
well, the reason here is firefox slowish compositing. probably everyone having r200 especially notices that. firefox is redrawing canvas as it goes and that are one large textures.
well,… it helped (not fully though) to set redraw page on finish only (it is in ffox preferences).
Tvtime doesn’t work even though video overlay
Maybe I can help from my mplayer related issues. usually you get better results selecting gl overlay. in mplayer I get best results with gl2. Xv, AIGLX and mplayer never worked for me.

And well, I prefer chicken to crow, not having seen crow in store around here…
I couldn’t get fglrx 8.42 to install on my 64-bit Kubuntu Linux system. Something about a **binary error** during compile.
The fglrx driver in Ubuntu’s repositories was an earlier version that did not recognise my card.
I tried the (still 2D only) open-source radeonhd driver from Ubuntu’s repositories. It knew about my card, but it wouldn’t run properly. I sent my Xorg log from this failure to the developers at opensuse.org, and they were kind enough to respond, saying that their latest development version had fixed the issue that was reported in the log file I had sent.
I installed git, and I compiled the latest version of radeonhd open-source drivers from the git source code development system. It compiled fine, and I’m happy to say, the developers were right, and the issue had been fixed.
So now, for the first time in my Kubuntu Gutsy 64-bit OS, I have a working 2D driver for my ATI video card with R610 chip. It supports my 19″ widescreen WXGA LCD monitor at native resolution, which was something the vesa driver could not do.
I have to say, I did have to edit xorg.conf by hand copying parameters from the leaflet that came with the monitor to achieve this, so it is still very raw … but at least it works.
