“The wait is over! Apple is excited to announce our first official Developer Preview of Java 1.4.1 for Mac OS X version 10.2! The preview includes almost all of the 1.4.1 VM and UI implementation–much more complete than the version supplied at WWDC.
It’s now posted on ADC for download, and is accessible to all ADC members, Online->Premier. The seed is named “J2SE 1.4.1 Developer Preview 2” and has been posted to the “Download Software” section of the ADC web site. If you’re not an ADC member, now is a good time to join.” Read the announcement here.
It’s nice to see the project on its way. It’s late as hell, 1.4.1 should have been released a long time ago, but it’s still nice. Too bad it’s totally unusable.
AFAIK Apples last implementation of Java included
shared memory support. Suns implementation doesn’t,
although it was listet as a release driver for 1.4.0.
Can anyone tell me whether this release supports shared
memory and what Suns plans are in regard to this?
jeti, could you briefly explain what is “shared memory support for java”.
Is it a standard library’s package that allow interaction between several VM using shared memory (would be fine to have a RMI implementation using such a package) ?
I think the feature you are asking for is called “shared jvm”. There are already ways of doing it with Sun’s JVM, but the official addition to the Java will be with Java 1.5 release.
Java 1.5 release will be the biggest and the most important release of Java after 1.2. Everybody is talking about it for one year already. There will be many new features and improvaments, including couple of new things added to Java by C# (considering C# as a Java clone with different syntax), and much more.

I have no clue what you’re talking about with this “a long time ago” crap. They’ve been working pretty hard on it.
As far as being totally unusable, well, I doubt you’ve used it as much as you need to in order to make any kind of call like that.
