Hosting company RackSpace is open sourcing the software behind its cloud storage and computing platforms on Monday, the company is saying. The company is also preparing to launch OpenStack, an open source cloud platform, and will donate the open source code to that project.

What is the state of interoperability standards – I’m seeing lots of activity and open sourcing and open API-ing (amazon, google) … but it would be great to be able to migrate apps and data between clouds.
The people in the market for cloud services are usually going to be the sort who spring for support contracts regardless so it’s not like they really lose anything by doing this. At the same time it puts their name into the IT press in a positive light and opens up their solution to community improvement.
