The VMS (Virtual Memory System) operating system is available only on VAX and Alpha processors, and in spite of its undeniable qualities, its future seems uncertain. The FreeVMS project tends to the coding of an operating system under the GPL licence according to the specifications of the VMS systems. This operating system will function at least on i386 architecture, PPC, Sparc and Alpha processors. It is developed using the C language and it consists of a POSIX kernel and a DCL command line interpreter. In other news, MenuetOS 0.61 was released just a couple of days ago.
MenuetOS is actually pretty cool. It is amazing that it could be written in pure ASM. FreeVMS, hmm, I really don’t know. Why are they doing this? Is it just for fun?
Yeah, MenuetOS is pretty cool… it’s fun too see how it improves over the version, i think it’s going to be a very useable OS soon… right now, to me, it’s mainly a toy, but it is very promising…
MenuetOS is undeniably cool. FreeVMS isn’t the first VMS clone I know of, however it does seem to be further along the track than any of the others.
damn i loved VMS. the vax was my first introduction to a (physical) hands on beast of a mainframe! vaxen rock. vms is a damn sweet os. dcl well.. not a huge fan of dcl
VMS on a PC? That’s kinda funny. Necessary? Whatever, it’s a cool hack.
On the other hand, My computing nightmares center on my VAX Assembler days. FreeVMS are one sick litter of puppies. Someone needs to take away their compilers before they hurt someone, possible themselves.
