Apple on Wednesday seeded developers with a pre-release version of Xcode 1.1, an update to the developer tools that shipped with Panther. The update includes several features enhancements and bug fixes. Apple has also posted a new Panther-specific Java 1.4.1 update after pulling the previous version due to compatibility issues with other software.
how is this any different for the free registeration at connect.apple.com and the subsequential downloads there?
Java 1.4.2 RC2
XCode 1.1
to mention just a few?
If you register with Apple as a developer for free (connect.apple.com) you are considered a developer. Who’d have thunk?
Depending on how much you pay them (nothing, lots, tons, megatons) you get more access to beta versions of all kinds of Apple software (and video streams etc.). If you registrated for free, you will get only the basic stuff (which in this case includes XCode’s beta)
Note that the on-line download is only XCode 1.0 and XCode 1.0.1 Update and not the XCode 1.1 beta.
Free Registration = weekly info via e-mail, ability to download development tools as released.
$300 = same as free, plus they mail you a monthly CD set with beta tools and final tools when released. They also will mail you the latest version of Mac OS X free. If you keep your development licence paid up, you get each version of the OS as its released plus beta tools.
The more expensive plans include access to the testing labs, the ability to call Apple and have their techs help resolve problems with your application, hardware discounts, and conference discounts.
I was actually a $300, member up until the Mac OS X days (I need to sign-up again). Like MSFT, Mac OS 9 came in differnent flavors depending on which language you used; so the monthly mailing would also include a copy of the OS for each language Apple supported; I guess Apple wanted you to test your Application on every language version to make sure it worked. The $1600 MSFT MSDN subscription doesn’t even give you the other language version of Windows

Yea, but you get 100 times more software though!
