Texstar tried many different kernels in search for one stable enough for the system. he found the 2.6.x kernels (at the time) lacking in one way or another. the next version (P8) should be based on a 2.6.x kernel.
I forgot to check, but I thought it ran default off of the 2.6 kernel. Oh, I was gonna write a review on it (like I did for OSNews on .6) just didn’t get around to it. Here are some more screen shots: http://swainnet.zapto.org/pub/screenshots/pslinuxos
enjoy.
Just my impressions of it: It was alright. The reality is, no great strives different from the .6 edition. Liked the theming a bit better (at least a better background) and Synaptic was the package manager which was good. The installer got a little better, but it’s still got some work to go. Kept freezing up on me and things. Even the Mandrake components were giving me problems (the disk partitioner for one thing) which was pretty annoying. Boot up times are still not very good. I have to say though, for a Live-CD it was a very powerful for a desktop system. If you’re looking for a recovery/rescue cd, don’t bother with this. Far too bulky. Not bad though, still needs work in the end though.
I have tried quite a few Linux distros, and the issue that kept me moving is package management. Debian blew all the others out of the water with its large collection of excellent quality binary packages (and up to date, too, if you use unstable – don’t let the name scare you).
All the RPM based distributions gave me hell. So much that I have developed a strong phobia of RPM. Mandrake was the worst; some of the packages shipped with the distribution wouldn’t work, WINE didn’t even work when compiled from source, it’s harder to find RPMs for Mandrake than for RedHat.
So, my question is, what about packages for PCLinuxOS? They are based on Mandrake, but things must have improved since I last used that distro. PCLinuxOS uses Synaptic, does it have apt as well? Can you upgrade all your packages with one command, and expect it to Just Work?
PCLinux worked for me except it did
not detect my plain soundcard(i810 module)
..there is always a fly in the ointment with
linux..Knoppix is a more fail- safe solution
though not as pretty as PCLinux..
I believe that if they were to upgrade their kernel
to 2.6 the problem would be go away

Sorry wrong address. Man I need to spellcheck myself more:

sheesh. Too bad you can’t edit these entries. If a moderator want to fix that, go ahead. Otherwise just stick with this link.
just to let you know: You have absolutely misspelled on your error message.
the i810 sound works for me on mandrake 10 using kernel 2.6, on a dell laptop. so i guess pclinuxos would work if it bases itself off mandrake 10/k2.6
