The PostgreSQL database project has recently released Version 8.0, which was received with quite some fanfare, mostly due to its first-ever Windows port. Mad Penguin talked with Josh Berkus, one of the core team members, to find out how 8.0 has fared since its official release on January 17, 2005.

Check out PG Lightning Admin for Postgresql 8.x
It’s very cool, and is designed for Windows, unlike PG Admin III which does not have a windows look and feel.
Also if you develop storec procs/functions you will really appreciate PG Lightning Admins function editor with code completion and parameter hinting. It also has a MDI task bar that filters the objects based on the open database, and each database opens in it’s own tab in the enterprise manager.
I actually just picked up a copy for 15.99 and love it.

Has anyone noticed that when you go to the postgres home page there is nothing on the main page about the Windows port?
I recommended it to some friends and they got back to me and said they could not find the link for the windows version, and so I went to check it out and you have to look under the What’s new link to find it.
If anyone from Postgres is reading, please put more effort into advertising the native windows port. There are a lot more corporate windows users than Linux/Unix and if you want those users you should more prominately display this fact on the main page.
Just my 2 cents on this.

Now that is a nice looking tool. It’s not a snap-in, but it looks alot nicer and more feature rich than PG Admin III. For 15 bucks, it’s a steal.
It is really nice to see professionals evaluating RDBMS the way i can see it here: Nice looking interface of the admin tool as the most important feature.
Personally I cant wait for Mattels(TM) BarbieSQL(R) or TransformerDB(R) – this would be real hit neither Oracle nor DB2 wolud be able to compete with!
The point is when you go to postgresql.org there is nothing on the main page about the native windows port.
Someone just looking at the main page would have no clue that their is a native windows port available.

The admin tool is a pretty important thing when you are coming from MS SQL server or Oracle.
Believe me a MS SQL DBA would not know what to do with the psql command line tool.
Come on,get with it.
In the bookstore, you can find tons and tons of MySQL related books. I certainly wish there were more PostgreSQL books. The online documentation is good, but I personally would like to have a printed book that can walk me through everything since I’m pretty much a PostreSQL neophyte.
I’ll be looking forward to more books on PostgreSQL. If anyone knows of any recent PostgreSQL books that would help me get started with PostgreSQL then please point me to them.
