Does the Mac Mini Stack Up?: A Comparison

I have been an omni-platform user, Windows, OS X and Linux user for some time now. I love different things about each platform and loathe just as much as I like about all three. The release of the Mac Mini at MacWorld really made me wonder if Apple made good move in jumping into the low range market. I decided the best way to see was to compare the Mini to my primary box, a similar system in specifications and price.

PostgreSQL 8 Released

After more than a year of hard work, the PostgreSQL Global Development Group has proudly announced the release of version 8.0.0 of the PostgreSQL ORDBMS. This release involves possibly more major changes than any prior version of PostgreSQL since 6.3, and it is the first PostgreSQL release to natively run on Microsoft Windows as a server. You can read the complete announcement and download it from any mirror or using BitTorrent.

The State of Windows Security

In recent years, security, especially of the Windows platform, seems to constantly reawaken as a topic of eager discussion. Tech magazines and websites regularly publish articles on the subject, offering tips and tricks to stay clear of the latest virus or spyware. Often mainstream newspapers jump in on the act, providing glimpses of the latest developments.

Free Software in Reality Isn’t Free

Software, whether application software like gcc or system software like Linux which are part of the Free Software Foundation attract masses by their appeal of being free. In reality, this in-born-nature of FSF software of being free (in the sense of freedom of speech and not free beer) is not so clear and cogent to a common man. More significantly, if one takes an in-depth look into the Linux world, things seem to go the other way. Update: Fanatic OSNews reader Hubert Figuiere lets us know of the Paul Ferris' rebuttal to this editorial. Thanks Hubert!
