Java, Safari Updates for Mac OS X Panther Released

MacMinute reports that Apple has released Java 1.4.2 for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther. According to the release notes, the update provides support for Sun's Java 1.4.2 APIs, and includes enhancements to drawing performance and stability for both Java applications and Java applets. Java 1.4.2 is available via the Mac OS X Software Update preference pane. Apple on Monday also released Safari 1.2.

Apple Seeds Mac OS X 10.3.3 to Developers

Apple continued the further development of Mac OS X 10.3 Panther this week with the first seedings of Mac OS X 10.3.3 build 7F24 and Safari 1.2 build 125. Meanwhile, the latest version of Safari boasts the ability to use the tab key to cycle through form elements and hyperlinks, in addition to sporting a beefed up download manager supporting resuming downloads. The browser update will also deliver improved performance and the ability to view image dimensions, sources said.

CodeTek Ships VirtualDesktop 3.0

CodeTek Studios is now shipping version 3.0 of VirtualDesktop, software that lets Mac OS X users work on multiple projects on separate—as the name implies—"virtual desktops." The latest version, which runs on both Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3, adds support for Apple's X11, Panther's Expose feature, an auto-hide pager, enhanced hotkey support, improved AppleScript support and more. Apple Previews Xgrid Technology

Apple today previewed Xgrid, a computational clustering technology from Apple’s Advanced Computation Group (ACG). Xgrid helps scientists and others working in compute intensive environments to fully utilize all IT resources, including desktops and servers, by creating a grid enabled "virtual" IT environment that takes advantage of unused computing capacity to run batch and workload processing.
