Taking an intentionally cautious tone, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems executives said Wednesday that the first eight months of their 10-year partnership have yielded small, but significant progress.

We had the pleasure of having a quick chat with Sun's COO, Jonathan Schwartz, yesterday. We talked about a variety of things, including Java, Solaris, Red Hat and good ol' Unix.

The integration of Microsoft and Sun Microsystems technology is progressing, but it is more complex than envisioned, according to Scott McNealy, Sun's chief executive.

Early in 2003, Hideya Kawahara, a Senior Staff Engineer at Sun Microsystems, had an inspiration. Recognizing that desktops had not changed substantially in 20 years, he set out to make them more aesthetically appealing and more powerful.

Sun Microsystems has taken the wraps off a new version of its Java Desktop System (JDS) running on its Solaris OS. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based network computer maker, which made its JDS Release 2 software available this past weekend, said it has now ported the desktop environment to Solaris running Intel and AMD x86-based servers and workstations.

Whatever pleasantries once existed between Sun and Red Hat have vanished. This won't come as a shock to many of you. The companies have been jawing in the press for some time. The extent, however, of Sun's loathing for Red Hat is more profound than many imagine, with Sun's CEO Scott McNealy largely confirming a shared attack with Microsoft against the Linux vendor.
