For the “bleeding edge,” the FreeDOS distribution GNU/DOS 2005 has had 15 software updates so far, including those dealing with speed and bug fixes, an improved menu system, a new screen saver, and a new package management system since its release last month to prepare for GNU/DOS 2006, which should be released by this winter. You can download these updates at the official GNU/DOS Web page.
Meanwhile, the operating system/programming language TextOS has been updated to versions v1.0b9 and v2.0b8, which are both faster and include an updated version of the supplied editor/file viewer. Download both versions at the official TextOS Web page.

Most version of DOS will run on an 8088.
You have to understand the purpose of GNU/DOS. From the GNU/DOS web site:
“… DOS is still the fastest home PC operating system around. This is why I intend to “modernize” DOS by combining it with the GNU utilities in the form of a distribution.”
“I also compiled the kernel specifically for 286 and higher machines; since the required DJGPP requires 486DX or higher (or 386SX or higher with a math co-processor installed)”
Wow, TextOS has come along way since I helped out Dan (see http://danq.lunarpages.com/textosnames.html / version 1.0b4).
I hope he’s rewritten most of it, the last time I looked at it there were tons of possible memory leak/overflow issues.
I fixed them when you (JPortal) reported them. I didn’t add all of your suggested improvements, although I added most of them to the 2.0 tree and gave you credit.
