Most of the reviews are published shortly after the release of a distribution, and there's always someone who complains that one cannot really "review" a distribution after only a few days of actually working with it.

IBM plans to announce Monday that it will contribute some of its speech-recognition software to two open-source software groups.

Nemerle is a hybrid (functional, object-oriented and imperative) programming language for the .NET platform. The key features of the language include C#-like syntax, easy access to functional, object-oriented, and imperative features, powerful code-generating macros, variants, pattern matching, static and on-demand dynamic typing, and type inference. This version makes the Nemerle language full CLS consumer and producer. A number of non-CLS features are also in place, for C# compatibility, but CLSCompliant attribute checking is not yet supported. Any lack in CLS compliance is a bug now.

Fourteen months ago I wrote an editorial, suggesting that Apple should create an ultra cheap machine to battle the PC world. On that article, I suggested some specs for the hypothetical "Strawberry" computer. As technology is moving on fast, I am now updating these specs. To get the idea though, please make sure you read last year's article before you read on this one.

With feedback, Ingo Molnar has continued to improve his voluntary kernel preemption patch. Testing the patch has revealed a number of areas in the 2.6 Linux kernel that were causing high latency. Fixes have been created and merged as these areas have been located. Read more at KernelTrap.

Because of the long march to Longhorn, Gartner recommended that companies standardize on Windows XP SP2 so that they will have the option of buying into the first Longhorn release or waiting for a future release that includes WinFS. In the mean time, customers shouldn't make plans that include the system, Gartner said.
