The announcement is not out and about yet, but you can download the 3-CD beta 2 of the upcoming Mandrake Linux 9.0. Happy bug hunting.

i’ll wait until the announcement is made though, to see what’s fixed.
i thought it’d be every 2 weeks and this seems a bit earlier than i expected too.
(i’ll probaby hold until an RC is released anyways)
The first beta came out on July 21st. Today is Aug 2nd and the announcement will probably come later today or tomorrow. That is roughly 2 weeks.
the x libraries didnt install correctly (for me) on the first beta.
back to 8.2 until this one is stable i guess. im liking 8.2 more every day. i like the balance of being able to actually configure the beast (longtime win user here) and being forced to read documentation, learn command line, etc. mandrake is definitely my fave distro.
well,I am not a fan of Mandrake. I was burned to many times by critical aplications that seem to not work every time….one thing that is odd to me is that the installer seems to install diffrently every time you do it.
I was a big fan of mandrake in the 7.x days, but after 7.2, the quality seemed to suffer slightly and stedely.
mandrake is just FULL OF BLOAT!
I’ve had it for month on my main station along with win2k, I’ve learnt really quickly that the 2gb mdk8.0 partition was WASTED… thx pqmagic, now it’s gone.
I’ll never install it again… It really felt… “unfriendly”.
No network neighbourhood of any kind. No convenient mp3 player (YES i know there is a THOUSAND there, but NONE was good enough)… and well… everything was just… not in the right place. It was all “wrong”.
I’ll give lycoris a try, cause they seem to work very hard on making a really user friendly distro….
Whatever, weirdo.
Since you give no real data, don’t mind if nobody listens to you.
Linux doesn’t get much more user friendly desktop oriented than Mandrake. If Mandrake doesn’t cut it for you given what you are looking for I’m not sure any Linux would. Try again in a year or two.
As for network neighbourhood that’s a NetBui concept, that is it is something that is truly “native” to Windows while a port to Unix (its one of the only networking things that this is true of virtually all the rest are the other way around). I doubt there will be any year that a current Unix will ever offer as good of NetBui support as a current Windows box.
What’s making you hang out on an OS board and wanting to try a Unix in the first place?
I can give you 3 distros that are better…..
1) suse
2)Lycoris
3) Xandros
mandrake is considered so good becasue they were the first to have a realt click and go installer.
however, there drake apps are bungled around, none have the same feel to them….helll Mandrake does not even give 2 min to replace the KDE utils with the drake apps or even put them in the Utils menu.
and I HATE thier depressing icons/colors.
1 – suse : mmmm this is not free software –> trash
2 – lycoris : the ugly XP look ( hu hu hu )
3 – xandros : there is no release
for sharing directoy its very simple : http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/82/en/user.html/diskdrake-file…
i found mandrake alot easier to install then microsloth’s winblowz.
1. it’s free
2. it doesn’t take 9 reboot after installation
3. ever heard of xmms you shmuck, it’s exactly like winamp
4. easy to update and no “you must consent to allow us to
automatically update you sys” contracts….
5. microsloth is just crap
heh… just me or is MS bashing becoming a bit LAME…
it just makes me picture another 12 year old acne sufferer.
“heh… just me or is MS bashing becoming a bit LAME… ”
Yes, I whole heartedly agree. I wish Eugenia would add filters to disallow posts with ‘M$/Window$/Windoze/Lin-sucks/etc.
I guess it was kind of funny for the first hour when somebody thought of it, it has been worn thin about 3 years ago.
ROFL Darius – how true!
As far as the big distos go, i think SuZE edges out Mandrake, mostly because of YAST2’s various capabilities, especially with selecting and installing software.
Lycoris is a whole other ballgame, but well worth it if you’re looking for simplicity. They have their software center or whatever you want to call it up and running now. Although limited, I’m sure it will expand. However, because of the nature of Lycoris, I do not think it will have huge amounts of programs to download and install. That would be counter to their objectives.
May be not the *best*, but the quickiest to install…
It recquires a bit of manuel settings to have everything in place and it runs full speed if you didnt installed servers stuff for your workstation…
Back in the thread : i’ll wait until final 9.0 since i putted some real hours of configuring/tuning my box.
I’m am sicked of those Debian/suse/Mdk sucks thread… if shoe fits, tell everyone…if not give us some hard evidence …
