PureMobile sent us in for a review one of Nokia's newest and most powerful handsets: the E90. The E90 is a Communicator-class device and very popular among businessmen, but also among system administrators too (one of our friends, sysadmin at Google, is using Nokia's qwerty/wifi devices specifically for SSH access). Read on for our review of the impressive E90.

This article reviews the Debian Linux-based Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. The basics of the internet tablet are covered as well as the new features available after the latest July firmware updates. Most notable new features would be a full fledged Skype client and SDHC support.

"Nokia has just announced an update to the Internet Tablet OS 2007 edition, feature upgrade release is now available for download. The update (version 4.2007.26-8) includes Skype client support, Adobe Flash 9 browser plug-in, improvements in online use times and single memory card support up to 8 GB."

Hi-Mobile.net sent us in the Sony Ericsson P990i for our monthly phone review. This popular smartphone was released last summer, but a new firmware of Symbian's UIQ 3.0 was released just 15 days ago and this is with what we mainly tested. The P990i sells for just $340 these days, fully unlocked, and it has a barrage of high-end features.

Palm admitted that a Linux-based version of its operating system will not be available until 2008, while Symbian said "Enterprises will not adopt mobile Linux because it is too fragmented and "completely unfeasible". "You would have to have a rock-solid business case to do that," he added.

"Late this spring, Palm, Inc. took the wraps off the Foleo, the first device in its new third product category. When it debuts in the next few months, this won't be a handheld or smartphone, instead it will something Palm is calling a mobile companion. I recently spent some time with a prototype unit, and I'd like to share my first impressions." More here.

The big competitor of Apple's iPhone, the LG KE850 (a.k.a. LG Prada), was recently released and our friends over at MobileBurn published a long review with lots of info about the impressive feature phone. Additionally, they also sent us a screenshot of the LG Prada rendering OSNews.

As rumored, the big new device that's Palm's Jeff Hawkins has chosen to announce at the D conference today is the Palm Foleo, which the company is billing as a 'mobile companion'. Boasting a 10-inch widescreen display and a full-size keyboard, the device is intended to be used in conjunction with your smartphone, with any edits to documents made on one device automatically reflected on the other thanks to the device's Bluetooth connectivity. The device also promises to turn on 'instantly', boasts built-in WiFi, and should last about 5 hours on a single charge. It runs Linux. More here.

Linux/Java has topped CEO Ed Zander's list things to look for from Motorola as it attempts a financial turnaround. At a New York press conference this morning, Zander introduced Linux-based 'Rokr' and 'Razr2' models, along with new top-level executives. Native SDKs won't be available.

Jon Stokes writes over at Ars: "At some point, I'm going to write my very last e-paper/e-ink article for Ars. After almost a decade of thin, flexible, low-power displays being "three to five years away," I can finally see that the time for e-paper's mass-market debut is almost upon us. A case in point is Fujitsu's new FLEPia portable tablet, samples of which are now available in limited supply as of this past Friday."

It's not a smartphone, yet it can send and receive e-mail messages; it's not a phone, yet it can make phone calls; it's not a portable multimedia player; yet it can playback audio/video files; and it's not a notebook, yet it can browser the web. Are you confused yet? Alright, let's see if we can define the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. The N800 does a lot of things, but it can't be placed in any one of the multitude of portable categories. Nope, it's in a category all by itself."

Dell has stopped selling its Axim line of handhelds and is not planning a new product in the category, the computer maker said on Monday. "The Axim X51 family is no longer being offered, and we have no plans for a follow-on product at this time," Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden said in an email. Camden noted that the company does sell handhelds from other makers on its website, including GPS devices and smartphones.

Palm is finally getting ready to land its users onto a modern Palm-built OS. Ed Colligan, in his Investor Day keynote today, announced that Palm will be launching a homegrown Linux-based OS by the end of the year, with Opera for a browser and the recently acquired Chattermail for messaging.
