Is SuSE Ready for the Laptop? Review of SuSE 9.2 Pro

Linux laptop support has been in my experience abysmal at best. Things that just work when running Windows XP are either horribly broken, or simply not implemented at all under Linux. Many Linux distributions have little or no real ACPI support. Imagine using your laptop without a battery meter, or any noticeable fan control whatsoever. Due to the lack of mature ACPI support in most modern distributions, I have had to deal with a very large amount of suffering.

Review: SuSE Linux 9.2 LiveCD

Novell has recently released SUSE Linux 9.2 LiveCD/DVD edition. In line with its impressive track-record, SUSE managed to make yet another step forward each time. Having used SUSE 9.1 for a while now, I was more than looking forward to this new release, so I downloaded and ran SUSE 9.2 LiveCD on my Dell Inspiron, and gave it a try.

Novell Releases Updated SuSE Linux

Freddie Kavanagh, Novell's chief technology officer for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, gave attendees an update on the progress of Open Enterprise Server and Novell Linux Desktop, the two major products intended to bring together Novell's legacy customers with technology acquired from Ximian and SuSE. Both are expected by the end of this year, although Novell expects OES to make more of an immediate impact than the desktop.

SuSE Linux 9.2 Announced; Novell’s SuSE woos Linux ‘newcomers’

Novell has claimed that its forthcoming SuSE Linux Professional 9.2 distribution will appeal to "Linux newcomers" as well as technical enthusiasts. Also, Novell's Nat Friedman, vice-president of its desktop technology group, said open source vendors work off a modular, flexible development model that allows them to deliver new features to customers more regularly than Microsoft. Novell has also said Microsoft's Longhorn delay will give it more time to push iFolder, which, like WinFS, stores data in a user's real file system and tracks metadata in a separate location.

Novell’s SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 Announced

Novell today introduced SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9, with significant performance, scalability, manageability and security enhancements designed to handle corporate workgroup and data center requirements with ease. With this release, Novell offers the first enterprise-class Linux server built on the new Linux 2.6 kernel. Novell ZENworks Linux Management further strengthens this offering by adding the change and configuration solution for the enterprise.

Moving from Debian To SuSE Linux and Back Again

I'm sure everyone is sick of reading reviews of Suse 9.1 by now but perhaps this one is a little different. This is not an ordinary review in the sense that I don't provide lots of colourful screenshots, or ramble on endlessly about the included software versions and other trivial things. Written from the point of view of a Debian user trying to switch to an "easier" distribution, I concentrated on how Suse stacks up compared to some of the traditional Debian strengths.
