SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta 6; OpenSUSE Project News

The OpenSUSE project has announced the development version SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta 6. Also, the revised released schedule for SUSE Linux 10.1 and the start of the SUSE Linux 10.2 schedule with eight months development have been posted. The project attended FOSDEM 2006 and the slides of the talks given there are now online (audio/video recordings will follow soon). Last but not least the preview phase of the openSUSE Build Service has started.

OpenSUSE Linux 10.1 Beta 5 Released

Faster than you can count to five, the OpenSUSE team has released beta 1, 2, 3, 4, and now 5. The OpenSUSE team still refuses to put the release notes somewhere for all to see prior to downloading, so I have little to tell you about this new release, apart from the usual bug-fix and overall smoothening between beta releases, which they probably have done. Read it all in the release announcement.

Updating SUSE Linux Clients From a Local Update Server

"In my last tip, we set up a single internal YaST Online Update server to pick up updated software from the SuSE mirrors. Now, we're going to answer the question: how do clients connect to the server? In setting up the single internal YaST Online Update server, the idea was to minimize the load on the existing mirrors by having one machine hit the outside servers, instead of however many client machines you have, and enhance security by keeping updates inside your firewall."

OpenSUSE 10.1 Beta4 Released

The 4th beta of OpenSUSE 10.1 has been released. This beta has quite a significant amount of bugs (especially in the installer) so be aware. The OpenSUSE developers somehow refuse to post any release notes, so I cannot tell you whether or not Novell's Xgl and Compiz are included. Update: In the meantime, check this page on how to get Xgl/Compiz running on OpenSUSE. RPMs available, so no compiling required. Happy experimenting.

OpenSUSE Linux 10.1 Beta 2 Released

The second beta of OpenSUSE Linux 10.1 has been released today. Main changes: "Fixes for a number of bugs - but note that most of the bugs reported against beta1 are not fixed yet; further integration and fixing of NetworkManager; SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta1 comes with the Intrusion Prevention framework; AppArmor 2.0 which is started by default in beta2; updated to KDE 3.5.1 release packages." Downloads locations are in the release announcement.

OpenSUSE Linux 10.1 Beta 1 Released

The first beta of OpenSUSE Linux 10.1 has been released. Yoo can get it for PPC, x86 and x86-64 architectures; each release consists of a whopping 5 CDs. This beta comes with (CVS versions of) glibc 2.4 and GCC 4.1, X.org 6.9, KDE 3.5, GNOME 2.12.2 and the 2.6.15 Linux kernel. SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta 1 also comes with the Intrusion Prevention framework AppArmor 2.0. Download locations are in the release announcement.

Coders Wooed by Novell for OpenSuSE

Early in 2006, Novell plans to release a development framework that will let outside contributors or third-party software developers contribute software or patches. The framework also will include a publicly available server that any registered developer can use to build software, Novell said. Since the OpenSuSE.org site was launched, there have been 750000 verified installations of SuSE Linux, Novell said.

OpenSUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha 4 Released

"SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha4 is ready for testing. New significant changes in 10.1 Alpha4 since 10.1 Alpha3: further integration of NetworkManager (note: NetworkManager is on by default on NLD/SUSE Linux and off on SLES); Updates to all parts of the system, especially new bash version (3.1), new Linux kernel (2.6.15 rc5), KDE 3.5 final, GNOME 2.12.2, and X.Org 6.9 rc3." Mirrors are here for the three supported architectures (x86, x86-64, and PPC).

Installing SUSE Linux 10.0 on a Laptop

"All in all, SUSE Linux 10.0 OSS is the best Linux system I've used. It's easy to install and has a large selection of both desktop and server software. It has been extremely stable during my use. It is clearly an excellent choice for Linux beginners, with its fine documentation, easy installation, and comprehensive graphical configuration tools, while also offering software selection and powerful tools for the experienced user."

SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha 3 Released

SUSE Linux 10.1 alpha 3 has been released. Changes include: "Update to KDE 3.5 RC1; update of GCC to the current 4.1 development version; removal of linuxthreads support; NetworkManager will be the new way of managing changing network interfaces, Kinternet is now in maintenance mode; update to Linux kernel 2.6.14.2; /dev on tmpfs is mandatory, a static device directory is not supported any more; udev is now the sole program for handling hotplug events, superseding the old hotplug package."

SUSE Co-Founder Leaves Novell

Suse co-founder and kernel team member Hubert Mantel has resigned from Novell, the server software company that acquired the German Linux company in 2004. Mantel announced the move on a Suse Linux mailing list Tuesday, and Novell confirmed the move Wednesday. "I just decided to leave Suse/Novell. This is not (any) longer the company I founded 13 years ago," Mantel said in the e-mail. "I have been the maintainer of the Suse kernel for more than a decade now. I'm very confident the Novell management will find a competent successor very quickly."
