Panther Server Part II: A look at the Server Admin tool

In the previous version of Apple Mac OS X Server (10.2), service parameters were managed through a GUI tool called Server Settings, while log files for each of those services were read using a tool called Server Status. For the latest X Server release, Version 10.3, or Panther, the functionality of both of those tools, plus a bit more, has been combined into a single utility called Server Admin. Here is a look at the new GUI, with screenshots and explanations of what I believe are the best new features.

Mac OS X 10.3.1 Released

The 10.3.1 Update via Software Update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for the following applications, services and technologies: FileVault, Printing, WebDav, and FireWire 800 drives. This update also includes the latest Security Updates.

Xcode Developer Tools Updated; New Panther Security Update

From MacMinute: "Apple has released the first update to Xcode, its set of powerful developer tools for Mac OS X. Version 1.0.1 addresses an issue in the Xcode IDE that could potentially lead to data corruption or the loss of files particularly when source files contain illegal characters." Additionally, Apple also released a new Panther security update in regards to a vulnerability with the Terminal.

Panther Dazzles Devs; “Greatest OS Ever Invented”; Media Duel

AustralianIT has a review of the newly released Mac OS X Panther OS while eWEEK says that the Panther release provides integrated workbench for developers. On other Apple-related news, Musicmatch sent an e-mail to its customers letting them know that, despite the arrival of Apple Computer's iTunes for Windows, customers can still use its jukebox program to connect to Apple's iPod. However, the message warns them that if they install iTunes, Musicmatch's connection to the iPod will be severed.

Mac OS X 10.3 has Built-in File Defragmentation

MacSlash reports that when a file is accessed on Panther, a check is made to see if it is fragmented. If so, and if it is less than 20 MB in size, the filesystem will copy the file over to a contiguous area on the HD that will hold the file in it's entirety in concurrent sectors, and then free up the HD space the fragmented version used to occupy. There are cases though, where a third party defrag utility will be required for best results.

Apple’s Panther Outruns Jaguar; @Stake issues Mac OS X advisories

The latest OS X upgrade isn't a huge improvement, but it's faster and loaded with small enhancements that'll make your Mac purr, says BusinessWeek. In the meantime, Internet security company @Stake has warned of newly discovered vulnerabilities affecting Apple Computer's Mac OS X operating system. UPDATE: Apple Computer's latest version of its Mac OS X operating system, Panther (fourth release in 2.5 years), patches security flaws that affect previous versions of the operating system, leaving security experts wondering if users will have to pay the $129 upgrade fee to be secure.
