General Unix This is the 30th anniversary of USENIX, the Advanced Computer Association. USENIX was started in 1975 as 'The Unix Users Group' and has been holding regular conferences ever since (along with many other activities, of course). USENIX focuses on the Unix world, including unix-like OSes like Linux. The USENIX conference is the place to go if you want to find out about topics such as advanced system administration or the latest filesystem research projects. USENIX is a blend of academic presentations and socialization. If you want to ask Andy Tanenbaum what he thinks of Linux, you can do it at USENIX.

I think most of us know where Andy Tanenbaum stands when it comes to linux. But it would indeed be fun to attend.

What does Andy Tanenbaum think of Linux?

This did catch me off gaurd. I think that the conference attendece is also affected by 2 major linux conferences in the US every year. It is a shame that the associations that run these things don't work together.

I think his views may have changed since 92 ??

LISA is a better conference.
by Han Solo on Thu 14th Apr 2005 14:41 UTC

Personally I think LISA is a much better conference for most Unix people than the general USENIX conference.

Bummer...

I'm practically down the street and I didn't go. That's because I'm too po' to go.

Question
by Smartpatrol on Thu 14th Apr 2005 19:55 UTC

Just wondering if its a collection of the old Battle Axe Unix bigots(greasy hair, long unkempt beard) parading around like they invented Unix. Those people annoy me to no end and they prove useless in modern IT business.

No, Stallman won't be there. After all, it's GNU (Not Unix).

Does not live in Europe
by Jeroen Ruigrok van der Werven on Fri 15th Apr 2005 08:00 UTC

For all I know, Usenix never really lived in Europe, so a lot of the European people in the open source world are not really convinced to go to the USA to attend those meetings. That plus the fact the USA is being overly anal with regard to the information gathering on the plane ride, which many of us in Europe boycot.

Thanks

Nice report. Thanks for making the effort to do it.

Scandinavians and USENIX
by Gosub on Mon 18th Apr 2005 14:11 UTC

Quote: "In fact, there were quite a few Scandinavians at the conference. I don't know why - is USENIX well-advertised over there?"

In Norway you get a USENIX membership if you are a member of NUUG (Norwegian UNIX User Group). Thus we (NUUG members) read about the conferences in ;login:. Don't know about the other Scandinavian countries though.

I have found that Usenix is one of the most intellectually stimulating conferences.......
