Recently, Ashcrow had the privilege to sit down with SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 for the AMD64 and test it in a real working environment to see how it stands in comparison to other Linux offerings.
At a press conference at the LinuxWorld coference earlier today, Novell CEO Jack Messman announced that his company will be withdrawing from the UnitedLinux partnership its newly acquired subsidiary SuSE had brokered with Linux vendors SCO, Conectiva, and TurboLinux. SuSE has always been one of our favorite Linux distributions and this release is no disappointment. It fine-tunes SuSE's offering and bundles a lot of value into one package. Experienced Linux users will appreciate the powerful bundled tools, while newbies will like the ease of use and stress-free installation. This version comes with five CDs, a DVD, and both user's and administrator's guides.
The SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 has recieved EAL3 Certification. This is a step up from their previous accomplishment of EAL2, which they received (in association with IBM) with their product.

I recently picked up a copy of SuSE 9.0 Professional. I have never used or been familiar with a SuSE product before as I've only used Mandrake, Red Hat, and a bit of Debian. After using Red Hat for a while I decided to evaluate SuSE and I am now sorry for not having tried it sooner.

Suse also provides a free, downloadable version via ftp. However, this version only contains i386 rpm's, whereas the pay versions support i586 (Intel Pentium processors and above). AMD processors are also supported as is the Athlon 64 (64 bits)."
SuSE Linux, until now known mainly as 'that European flavor of Linux' with many Americans, is getting ready for a big push with businesses and government organizations, with the introduction of SuSE Linux 9 with 64-bit processing and 2.6 kernel enhancements to the Americas Thursday.
