"Microsoft Vista Build 5365 has been released. We are downloading it at the moment, screenshots will follow in our spanking new image gallery. This is a Vista-only release, i.e. no Longhorn Server attached, which is a shame. According to Microsoft, this is another 'refresher' build, with bug fixes rather than new features. We have been informed that regional fixes for IME, time zones, etc., have not yet been implemented; those will ship in all post-5370 builds." Microsoft released a FAQ alongside this build, get it in .doc or .pdf format.

I mean... The article just says "We're downloading Build 5365". No comments about anything new, changes, fixes, whatever. No images in the gallery yet... Nothing.
There is a FAQ from MS, but it only adds 5 questions concerning this new build.

Well, my take is simple this: People who love Microsoft generally look to Microsoft to bring them all of their solutions. Milo was just pointing out that if you're so in love with windows, you'd most likely use it, and other Microsoft solutions, sine they're so amazing (in your eyes.)
Nothing was said about Linux; Linux users run anything, and typically I find Linux users running Micrsoft applications in wine. There's nothing wrong with that.
Conversly I don't think Milo was saying that there's something wrong with the site running OpenSource software, but instead was just pointing out that it's funny that the microsoft camp has so much to say about the triumph of windows server of linux, when their own fanboy sites don't use those tools. It makes me chuckle, honestly.
And yes, Microsoft is a joke. A very elaborate one, but it is. Eta kuram na smekh.

I switched to Linux about 7 years ago. I promote it's use as well as that of OSS.
Firewall - IPCOP
FileServer - Ubuntu Server
Workstation - Ubuntu
Wifes Workstation - Win2k / Ubuntu
I use all OSS software, EXCEPT ONE, Opera. My wife dual boots, but still makes the statement that Linux and OSS is not good enough for exclusive use. Her opinion of the state of Linux.
I use a closed source browser and everything else OSS. The rest of the browsers, OSS or Otherwise, ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH in my opinion. I think OSS and Linux are excellant with the exception of the craptastic browsers.

NO. First of all, you don't run a server off of a WINDOWS DESKTOP. Therefore that is bunk.
Second, whoever runs the site probably doesn't use their own servers, but is hosted by someone. Unless they have a need for ASP, I doubt they give a flying f--k if their host uses linux, as long as it WORKS.
I don't understand how some of you can't seem to grasp this. It's not hypocritical and it's not an admittance that the product you are praising is bad. Get over yourself.

The new theme for IE, is a copy of the same icons used in a firefox theme.
The new theme for IE, as well as the Firefox theme you reference, are both pixel-for-pixel copies of Everaldo's free and immensely popular "Crystal" theme for KDE. Any developer can use the Crystal icons for anything they want, so MS didn't do anything wrong, but it is pretty sad that they don't have talented enough graphical designers on staff to come up with something beautiful and original on their own.

Microsoft emply iconfactory (some of the best Iconists on the web) to create their icons. It has been stated by MS in beta releases and on channel 9 that the current icons in the betas are not the final ones. We are unlikely to see the final graphical polish until the released product, in order to prevent massive copying of the style before launch.

Be that it was still using the old Postscript engine, but at the same time, had they simply replaced that with the PDF, but maintained the same theme, although not 'lickable', it does look very professional and conservative; something that would make business people have multiple orgasms at the very site.

I agree with you that the poster's argument is pretty weak. The truth is that the logoff/shutdown icons are standard depictions, and that the "marble" look for KDE was hardly original (which is okay, it's not made to be original, it's made to be pleasant to the eyes).
There are WinXP skins for both KDE and Gnome, and that's fine as well. We should all be able to customize the look of our desktops like we want...however, you should still have responded rationally instead of emotionally.

I never see any public marketing at all for any open source anything.
I never see Linux distro commercials or adds. I never see KDE or Gnome commercials or adds. I never see ad spots or infomercials about open source or the FSF. I never see any effort at all to inform the general public that anything but Windows and Macs are available.
I never--or very very rarely--see any marketing aimed at the general public at all for any type of open source opportunities.
No non-geeks I know even know Vista was delayed for eternity and had the original guts ripped out of it. In fact, they don't even know what "Vista" is--Yet.
But they will.
Windows has 90+% of the market now, and when Vista is released they'll continue to hold 90+$ of the market for years to come unless someone tells them otherwise.
Look, I like cars, kind of. I need one. My life would be a pain without one. But I spend zero amount of time searching for the next great car. I'm just not that interested. The only reason I know new models and new options come out is through marketing and advertisement.
If the GNU/Linux people are really interested in getting their product into peoples houses then they should go knock on their doors and tell them it's been invented and is available.
FWIW, I run Ubuntu exclusively on my main computer

Agreed. Visually, and technically (For the most part), its nothing new for Linux (I don't have a MAC to compare), but I will be interested to see how it fare's up on the internet with virus, malware, spyware, and general security issues.
Their new user and driver model should provide some higher level of security (Seeing that they are finally following *nix's lead).
Once it's released (If it ever is), it will be interesting to see if they get rid of Patch Tuesday.

Proof? My comany pays a MS Develpeer Network a few thousand dollars to get the OS previews so we can develop for Visa, as a MS partner.
I challange anyone to go to the MSDN subscrition site and download anything since Feb.
We can spekulate why, but that is a fact.
(maybe they had to re-write 60% and now only send non-developers a copy, and only to the few that they can control, and spin it as progress. I think there is no progress).

The accelerated interfaces use the capabilities of your graphic card when available, and other that Vista's "blur" effect & OS X "water waves" effect (only used on widgets), mostly everything else is supported by very modest cards.
Transparency & shadows in particular are "free" for practically any graphic card, even for integrated graphics.

Looking at the screenshots I have to admit I am starting to like what I see. Of course I don't like all of it and noticed inconsistency on some of the screens. (first and second setup screen. Toolbar is different.)
The classic control panel is cluttered and the probability of "beginner user" confusion is very high. The rest of the screens are very clean layed out and it really impresses me compared to the past screenshots. OSX is deffinately visible (especially the wallpaper and screensavers), but why wouldn't you copy certain elements of the greatest OS. I'm using MAC's at home and work, but looking at the screenshots I will certainly try Windows Vista and judge for myself. The virus, security and spam problems coming with Windows are different issues, but If Microsoft can figure this out, this might be a winner considering the huge user base they currently have. Just my 2 cents.

I think allot of the arguments are just silly. Anyone will use the best tools for the job - be that windows or Linux - some people (like me who uses Windows every day and am happy with things as they are as they do what I need them to do. - I have tried Various flavours Linux over the last few years - However i exclusively use PHP and MySQL for any websites I run and develop for. Its a case of whatever you feel comfortable with and will get the job done.
I don't get this whole X is better than Y or you cant use z if you use x... its just petty - people will use the tools available and (this is in my opinion a huge part of why someone uses the tools they do) people will use things they are used to. An os is NOT intuitive - people cannot just pick it up and use. People will usually stick with what they know.

Wow I remember Steve Jobs in an Apple Keynote saying "Redmond, start your copier" (think it was for tiger) and didn't believe this would happen but while looking to the screenshots I think it's impressive !
Just a question why not buying a mac and run OS X ?
You'll get a "beautiful" computer that can run about any OSes.
